Madison County – Red Butte

Drove forest road 218 until the turnoff for Moody Swamp.  Drove on to the end of the road and the trail head which has a maintained pit toilet.  Left the truck at 10:05 and headed up the jeep track.  The first part is fairly gradual, gaining about 400 feet in the first 1.5 miles.  The middle section was fairly flat and the last pitch was quite steep.  The main trail goes straight to the top of the adjacent knob, not as shown on the topo map.  We reached the summit 8108' at about 11:15.  Had a bottle of water and took pictures for a few minutes.  The views are panoramic, but due to the smoke, the Tetons could not be seen.  Piney Mtn and Garns Mtn (Teton COHP's) were clearly visible to the east.  Retraced the trail back to the truck and drove to Heise for a delicious lunch and a beer.  #22 in the bag.
